These AAPC CPC exam FAQs answer the questions my students ask most before test day. Whether you test online or in person, the format, scoring, and book rules are the same. AAPC CPC Exam FAQs: Format and Scoring
How long does the CPC exam take?
You get 4 hours to finish in one sitting. In addition, you receive a notice when 30 minutes remain. If you finish early, you may leave.
How many questions are on the CPC exam?
The exam has 100 multiple choice questions. Most questions come from the CPT code book, while others cover ICD-10-CM, HCPCS Level II, terminology, anatomy, guidelines, and compliance. Finally, ten case questions ask you to code from real clinical documentation.
What score do I need to pass?
You need at least 70% to pass.
When will I get my results?
Results usually post within 7 to 10 business days. That said, January, June, November, and December can take longer because of high volume and new content reviews.
How many attempts do I get?
Each purchase includes one attempt unless you buy the two attempt bundle. Note that you must be an AAPC member to take the exam.

AAPC CPC Exam FAQs: Code Books
Which code books can I use?
- AMA CPT Professional Edition. No other publisher is allowed.
- Your choice of ICD-10-CM.
- Your choice of HCPCS Level II.
What can I write in my books?
You may highlight, underline, and add brief notes you would use in daily coding. You may also add tabs to mark pages. However, you cannot add long passages, inserted pages, or questions from study guides, practice exams, or the exam itself.
Which year’s books should I use?
Use the current year’s books, because the exam is based on the current code sets. Although last year’s books are allowed, they put you at a disadvantage. Next year’s books are not allowed.

What do I need for the online exam?
- A computer that passes AAPC’s system check, plus a reliable internet connection
- An external webcam that shows your face, hands, keyboard, and about 10 inches around it
- A private room with a clear desk
- A valid government issued photo ID that matches your registration name
Also, printed guidelines are not allowed during the online exam. Only your three code books and a drink may be on your desk.
Is the online exam still split into two sittings?
No. Today, all AAPC online exams are taken in one sitting.
Can I skip questions and come back?
Yes. You can flag questions, skip them, and move between sections. Once you submit, though, you cannot go back.
What if I need to reschedule?
You can cancel or reschedule for free more than 48 hours before your exam. Within 48 hours, you cannot change your appointment. Likewise, if you miss your exam or fail the requirements, you lose your voucher.
Are accommodations available?
Yes. AAPC offers ADA accommodations for online exams. Get them approved before you purchase or schedule.

When should I arrive?
Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Otherwise, you are considered late, and late entry is not allowed.
Can I bring my phone?
No. Phones, smart watches, tablets, and fitness trackers are not allowed in the exam room.
Can the proctor explain a question?
No. Proctors cannot help with exam content, including clarifying a question.
