How to get an entry level medical coding job

Getting an entry-level medical coding job without experience is achievable if you approach it strategically.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

1. Understand What Medical Coding Involves 

  • Medical Coding Basics: Learn about the key responsibilities, such as translating medical diagnoses and procedures into codes for insurance claims and medical records.
  • Coding Systems: Familiarize yourself with the main coding systems used in the industry, like ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS Level II.

2. Obtain Relevant Education and Training

  • Certification Programs: Enroll in a medical coding certification program. Many community colleges, online courses, and vocational schools offer programs that can be completed in a few months.
  • Certifications: Consider earning a certification from a recognized body such as:
