Janine Mothershed founded Coding Clarified in 2015 after building her career the hard way: a young mom, the first in her family to attend college, choosing medical coding so she could support her children and be home to raise them. Her first certified position paid $18 an hour. She turned it into contract work with The Coding Network, then a CMS auditing role with Optum — and went from paycheck to paycheck to a career that changed her family’s future.

Today, Coding Clarified is an AAPC-approved medical coding school and a U.S. Department of Labor registered apprenticeship sponsor. More than 1,000 students have earned their certifications here. With over 20 years of professional coding experience and 20 years in EMS, Janine now trains the next generation of coders — and the EMTs and Paramedics who document the calls they code.

Janine’s two decades in EMS and her NAAC ambulance credentials are the foundation of Coding Clarified’s EMS documentation training, QA/QI programs, and registered EMT and Paramedic apprenticeships — taught from real field experience, not just a textbook.

It all started with family, and it still comes back to family: Janine is a proud mom of five — four girls and one boy — and recently welcomed two grandchildren. The freedom she found through medical coding is what she works to help every student find for their own.
