Introducing the Emergency Department Coding Internship

By Janine Mothershed

Want to get into the Medical Coding industry full force and advance from an apprentice to a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or get more experience to land the CPC job that you have always wanted? This is a fabulous opportunity for you.

In a time that Medical Coding is in such high demand, we are offering a new internship that will give you invaluable experience in the foundations of Emergency Department Coding. Hands-on experience

is needed to become a full CPC, rather than an apprentice or even if you are a CPC trying to acquire experience to get hired for a top job. By completing this internship and passing the final assessment, you will take your first steps on your new career path.

Who Can Become an Intern?

This Medical Coding internship is open to the public. Anyone with a CPC or CPC-A licensure that is not a current or past student of Coding Clarified and has their own set of books from the current year, EncoderPro or Codify from AAPC can be part of this great opportunity. If you are a current or past student, click here.

What is Included in the Internship?

This exclusive opportunity includes instructions for navigating the internship portal, which you will refer to throughout your experience.

Many references will be provided including; a policy and procedure manual, ED audit forms, an ED coding profile, MDM (medical decision-making) grid and a discharge disposition list.

Your training will be composed of a series of videos and slide decks from healthcare professionals covering history, exam MDM, split or shared visits, technical work of procedures, modifiers and NCCI (National Correct Coding Initiative) edits.

To get you acquainted with Emergency Department Coding, you will be working with two demo charts and an audit form for levels LWBS/AMA, 99281-99285, 99024 and 99291. In addition to the demos, there are 2,000 internship charts with documentation and an audit sheet. These are broken down into ED E/M levels 99281-99285, post-op visits, critical care and procedure-only.

For each chart, you will be expected to abstract the disposition, E/M code, CPT code(s), diagnosis code(s), split or shared visit, provider, scribe involvement and medical student involvement.

After passing the final exam with a minimum of 95%, you will be ready to enter the real world of Emergency Department Coding as a CPC and add this internship to your resume. The Medical Coding experience that you obtain through this internship is key to success when you are new to the field.
